Every year, the Space Foundation recognizes space technologies applied to products and services in interesting and useful ways. Many products and services are nominated, but only two are inducted into the Space Foundation’s Space Technology Hall of Fame annually.
The Space Technology Hall of Fame® increases public awareness of the benefits of space exploration and encourages further innovation by recognizing individuals, organizations and companies that effectively adapt and market technologies originally developed for space to improve the quality of life for all humanity.
Space-based assets play a role in the governmental and economic framework of many countries, utilizing the unique vantage point of space to provide services otherwise unavailable. Space activities also permeate our lives in less visible ways: many consumer goods incorporate mechanical and technological advances originally developed for space programs.
To recognize and raise awareness of new space products and services, the Space Foundation maintains its Space Technology Hall of Fame and Space Certification programs. In collaboration with NASA, the Space Technology Hall of Fame annually honors individuals or organizations that have improved the quality of life on Earth by developing a product based on space technology.
The Hall of Fame 2011 inductees were commercial ## satellites and ##. For commercial ## satellites, the award was presented to two of the leading companies in this sector, ## and ##. The award recognized that geospatial technology from these satellites has improved national security, logistics and navigation, mapping, disaster tracking, and other important applications.
Space products and services have become integrated into the global economy, and their significance continues to increase. Some of the ways in which space products and services support various sectors of the greater economy are highlighted in Exhibit 1c.
