2011 – Japanese Space Industry Employment – Snapshot

According to the Society of Japanese Aerospace Companies (SJAC), Japanese private-sector space employment has averaged 6,380 jobs over the past decade. The number of Japanese private-sector space jobs was highest in FY 2001, at 6,871 jobs, and has oscillated up or down from the ten-year average by no more than 8% in each of the following years, with the exception of FY 2008.

2010 – Japanese Space Industry Employment – Snapshot

According to data from the Society of Japanese Aerospace Companies (SJAC), Japan’s space employment dropped precipitously between 2007 and 2008, but then rebounded even more sharply from 2008 to 2009, as shown in Exhibit 4l. The SJAC calculated a ##% decline in industry employment, from ## in 2007 to ## in 2008—the largest year-on-year decline since 1996, with more than ## positions eliminated.

According to the Society of Japanese Aerospace Companies, there were ## Japanese space employees in 2007, the most recent year for which data was available. Japanese space employment declined sharply between 1998 and 2003, mirroring workforce reductions that occurred in the United States and Europe linked to the telecommunications industry.
